New Clinic Brings Healthcare to Rural Areas

In Uganda, our partners are constructing a health clinic in the Sebei region. People in this region suffer from curable diseases, such as anthrax, polio, cholera, and malaria, and for specialized care must travel over 150 miles. By building a clinic, the Diocese of Sebei hopes to reduce the number of deaths resulting from treatable illnesses, providing high quality affordable outpatient services, maternity, and general care.

"I am extremely excited to inform you that the roofing of the health centre project at Sebei diocesan headquarters has been completed. The health centre is one of the milestones in the region . . . I believe it will benefit the community greatly."

Rt Rev Paul Kiptoo Masaba, Bishop of the Diocese of Sebei Kapchorwa Uganda

The Story…

People in the Sebei region continue to suffer from curable diseases such as anthrax, polio, cholera, malaria, and river blindness. Healthcare facilitates are scarce and the few functioning ones often face a shortage of staff and medications. Government healthcare facilities often lack skilled workers, medications, and equipment for simple tests, and those needing specialized care must travel to Kampala, 150 miles away from the Sebei region.

The Sebei Diocese in the Church of Uganda is working to change this. With funding from ARDF, they plan to construct a health clinic at their diocesan headquarters that will serve rural communities. This health center will provide affordable, quality, and reliable outpatient services, maternity care, and general care. The clinic hopes to reduce the number of deaths resulting from treatable illnesses, giving people the chance to be more economically productive and improve the quality of their lives. In addition to physical care, patients, their families, and other community members will also be given the opportunity to interact with God’s Word through daily devotions.

“I have been in this community for a long time as a teacher. I have seen many of our children grow up with many problems from lack of clean drinking water, long distances to school, and a lack of medical treatment. Health-related matters have been very difficult before. Patients would walk long distances and could not even be attended to well. Many people have died from preventable diseases and some with treatable diseases, like malaria. But since the diocese started working in the community, many things are being brought closer to the people. . . . But what is lacking is a good health facility. If the diocese now starts this, services will all now be brought closer. Bravo to the diocese for this initiative.”

Project Update…

The local community is excited for its completion, rallying around the clinic by visiting the site and even providing food for the construction workers. There are daily devotions and prayers each day before work begins, and our partners report that some workers have become Christians as a result! Recently, some Bishops and Clergy visited the site and offered their encouragement as well. The clinic has truly been a community effort!

Our partners are almost ready to add the roofing to the clinic! (Dec 2023)
