Love The World with ARDF this Lent

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers and sisters. If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.
- 1 John 3:16-18

Is your church interested in partnering with ARDF to Love the World? Consider doing the following:

  • Use one of the following prayers during your Sunday morning services during the Prayers of the People.

    • We pray that you will inspire and enable your church to love the world as you did, laying our lives down for our brothers and sisters. Guide the work of this congregation and of churches domestic and abroad who minister to those in their communities. We humbly ask you to strengthen the work of the Anglican Relief and Development Fund and all their partners as they seek to support local churches who love the world with actions and in truth. Lord in your mercy: Hear our prayer.

    • For the work of The Anglican Relief and Development Fund and all their partners who strive to love the world following your example, with actions and in truth. Lord in your mercy: Hear our prayer.

  • Take a special collection for ARDF during one of the Sundays in Lent.

  • Follow Ashley Wallace, author of The Liturgical Home for wonderful ways to incorporate family discipleship into your church’s rhythm. Stay tuned for the release of her new book, The Liturgical Home: Lent.

  • Participate in Peer 2 Peer Fundraising. Church youth groups and small groups can now easily create their own fundraising page through our website to share with family, friends, and on social media. Almsgiving is a traditional part of Lenten discipline, and you can make this a communal practice with a healthy dose of competitive fun by creating teams to see how much can be raised!  Resources for Families and Churches

Looking for ways to plan out Lent ahead of time? Check out our suggestions below.

  • Make A Mite Box

  • Read the Poetry of John Donne this Lent and Easter

    • John Donne (1571-1631) was an Anglican Priest and poet. Donne is best known as the most famous of the metaphysical poets, but he was also the Dean of St Paul's Cathedral in London, and England's most celebrated preacher. Fr. Timothy Clayton from Trinity North Shore in MA has curated two wonderful little books of Donne’s poetry, meditations, prayers, and sermons - one book for Lent and the other for Eastertide. This year, John Donne’s feast day falls on Easter Sunday!

  • Celebrate Shrove Tuesday Together

    • Celebrate with a pancake dinner, and use the evening to kick-start a peer to peer fundraising challenge! Your church can support ARDF by creating individual and team fundraising page through our website which can be shared with family and friends and on social media. Contact us to learn more!

  • Celebrate Ash Wednesday

    • Read our reflections on what it means to Love The World. Pray about how you can incorporate prayer, fasting, and almsgiving into your lenten habits.

    • Attend your church’s Ash Wednesday service.

    • Follow Ashley’s instructions to make an easy door hanging or lenten centerpiece for your home.

  • Celebrate the Feast of St. Matthias on Feb 24

    • St. Matthias ministered to Ethiopia. Learn about the two projects ARDF is currently supporting in Ethiopia. Pray for them, and consider donating to one or both of them.

    • Learn how trauma healing is bringing hope in Tigray, Ethiopia.

    • Learn about the church’s mission to bring clean water to Gambella, Ethiopia.

    • Make Dabo Kolo (a traditional Ethiopian snack) as a way to celebrate! See Ashley’s instructions here.

  • Celebrate the Feast of St. Joseph on Mar 19

    • Joseph was the husband of the Virgin Mary and the guardian of Jesus. Since St. Joseph was a carpenter and used his hands to provide for the Holy Family, we can use our hands to provide for others by helping to rebuild after natural disasters. Volunteer for a Domestic Disaster Response Mission Trip!

    • Learn how other cultures celebrate this special day, and make yummy Zeppole (Italian Donuts) with Ashley Tumlin Wallace.

    • Learn about the relief efforts ARDF is supporting for residents of Israel and Palestine. Think of how St. Joseph, along with Mary and Jesus, walked through places now in modern day Israel and Palestine, and pray for those suffering from the conflict there.

  • Celebrate Palm Sunday

  • Celebrate Good Friday

    • Read Ashley’s reflections and suggestions for celebrating this holy day on her blog.

    • Listen to Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion.

      • A Passion is a piece of music that goes through the last events of Christ’s life leading up to his crucifixion. Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion rotates between the words of Scripture sung by soloists, beautiful anthems that contains reflections upon the scripture, and big choral hymns that help to guide our response to the events leading to Christ’s death. Here is a YouTube version with English subtitles.

    • Engage with the Stations of the Cross.

      • Make the stations ahead of time with your family or church group. Have each member work on a different station.

  • Celebrate Holy Saturday

    • Spend some time in silence. If possible, attend your church’s Vigil service.

    • Get ready for the Easter Feast by dying your Easter Eggs ahead of time and getting them ready to decorate in the traditional Ukrainian style (see below).

    • Follow Ashley’s recipe to make Resurrection Cookies, a special treat that get’s “sealed up” in the oven overnight and is ready Easter morning!

  • Celebrate Easter Sunday!

    • Share the Feast! All throughout Lent our focus has been upon sharing Christ’s love with others. Put this into practice by inviting people over for a celebratory dinner, or host a church-wide party! Read Ashley’s reflections on extending the feast on her blog!

    • Make Ukrainian Pysanky Eggs.
