Update from Myanmar

“God is good, all the time.”

Myanmar

“We live in a time and in a place and in a culture where we need to look at our self-centeredness and how much of our life revolves around us. The giving of alms helps us in this. It helps us to get our eyes off of ourselves and onto the Lord’s mission in the world.”

- Archbishop Foley Beach, Anglican Church of North America

This Lent we are exploring several ARDF projects that still need funding. As you practice the discipline of Almsgiving or are collecting change for your mite boxes, consider the needs of our partners.

"Today, we had our new building's first floor being concreted. This is one of the major tasks. It went well without any problems. Please continue to pray for us, especially for the building. God is good, all the time. We are now busy, preparing to reopen our programs. We are therefore very positive."

–The Rev. Dr. Paul Myint Htet Htin Ya, Principal, Holy Cross Theological Seminary

Today we look at a project in Myanmar where we are partnering with the Anglican Province of Myanmar.

On February 1, 2021, the military in Myanmar staged a coup, replacing the democratically elected government. Three weeks later, anti-coup protesters continue to stage demonstrations across the country.

This is not good news for the ordinary people.

“Pray for the people of Myanmar who will bear the weight of suffering in the days ahead if international sanctions are placed on the country. The banks have already been closed and there are long lines for food and other essential goods.”

- The Rev. Canon Keith Allen, ACNA Canon for Myanmar

The Archbishop of Myanmar is a trusted partner of ARDF. The Most Rev. Stephen Than Myint OO is an ARDF Trustee and we have heard first-hand from him the struggles of his people. In these trying times, the church in Myanmar needs our support more than ever. Please continue to pray for them.

Beyond prayer, what is ARDF doing?

Last fall, ARDF approved a grant to the church in Myanmar to expand a seminary. Holy Cross Theological Seminary has been playing a central role in training clergy and uniting the Anglican church in Myanmar, since its founding in 1934. But it needs more space if it is to step up to new challenges, challenges exacerbated by the current political crisis.

Specifically, this project will allow the college to accept more students into its bachelor of theology program. At the same time, a master’s program is being established that will provide much needed advanced education. Better facilities will allow for more dormitories, updated classrooms and media, and the chance to host visiting scholars.

The first tranche of money has been sent and by God’s grace has arrived safely, despite the coup! These funds are for a generator and improvements to the multi-purpose hall, including the lighting and the public address (PA) system.

The need for orthodox education is stronger than ever. The church is called to play a healing role in the divisions facing the country. Training up lay and church leaders in the faith is an important step and is exactly what Archbishop Stephen has prioritized.

ARDF is grateful to have faithful, courageous leaders like Archbishop Stephen. We ask that you join us in supporting his vision.
