Tumaini Students are eager to learn.

This has been a strange year for students all over the world. This includes the students at Tumaini Academy, a primary school operated by the church in a remote area of Northern Kenya.

All schools in Kenya were closed during the early days of the pandemic. When schools began to open again, classes were limited to the students needing to prepare for the required standardized testing to get into high school. This meant that eighth graders at Tumaini, who would be sitting for the national high school entrance exam, could return to their studies. Because of the pandemic, the tests, normally in the fall, were held this spring. Everything in the preparation for this test has been different.

This national exam is a big deal! It is the equivalent of our SAT or ACT - except for eighth graders. A student’s score will determine what - if any - high school options they have.

Three years ago, the first class of graduating eight graders at Tumaini amazed everyone with their outstanding scores. The school received numerous awards and the students have gone on to succeed at some of the best high schools in the nation. Since then, the other schools in the region - spurred on by Tumaini’s success - began to graduate students with higher test scores than they had before.

However, this year, Tumaini is back as the best school in the region with a median test score higher than any other school in Marsabit. And both the top boy and top girl are Tumaini students. As the head teacher, Jacob Boru Nura wrote, “Long live the Anglican Church of Kenya’s Tumaini, the pride of the entire region for consistent excellence!”

We are so excited that the hard work and dedication of everyone at Tumaini is paying off. And we are grateful for the 174 sponsored children who receive this education. Our KCEP Tumaini sponsors are making an incredible impact - and now the test scores continue to prove it! And when students thrive academically, the entire community benefits. More and more parents are coming to value the Tumaini education. Meanwhile, the teachings of Jesus, part of the DNA at Tumaini, are being exposed to more and more community members in a region where Christians are in the minority.

We want to expose even more children and families to this life-changing education. But we need your help! We are looking for more sponsors for Tumaini students. In this impoverished community, many parents cannot afford to send their children to school. A student sponsorship of $30 a month ($1 per day!) provides tuition, lunch, books, uniforms, and shoes, along with an educational foundation built on a relationship with Jesus Christ. Learn more and please prayerfully consider sponsoring a child today.
