Relief for Victims of Flooding in East Africa
“Thank you for the concern for our people,” Sam Mugisha, Shyira, Rwanda
South Rwenzori, Uganda and Shyira, Rwanda
As if the coronavirus isn’t enough of a hardship for East Africa, the region has been hit by devastating floods! Crops, livestock, houses have all been washed away. Key infrastructure has been lost to landslides: schools, hospitals, churches, roads, and bridges. Experts are concerned for the health of those who are displaced, as they pack into crowded temporary housing among the backdrop of the coronavirus pandemic.
In Western Uganda, district officials estimate that 100,000 people have had to move into temporary housing.
Fortunately, friends in the USA heard about this flooding and have raised funds to help. St. Peter’s Anglican Cathedral in Tallahassee, FL alerted ARDF to the situation and then went on to raise funds that will assist victims of the flooding in South Rwenzori, Uganda.
Meanwhile, similar flooding occurred in Northern Rwanda. This has led to severe landslides that have wiped out homes and livestock - in addition to basic infrastructure. Friends at The Falls Church Anglican (TFCA), Falls Church, VA have responded to the need. Funds from TFCA will help victims in the Diocese of Shyira to rebuild their homes and meet other basic needs.
ARDF is thrilled to partner with these North American churches in these relief efforts. The world is so unstable these days, but thanks to extended community, the Anglican church can spread a message of hope and tangible help!
