Update from Myanmar: Holy Cross Theological College

“We hope 2022 will be a year full of blessings and favors. Thank you for all your kind assistance.” – The Rev. Dr. Paul Myint Htet Htin Ya

Myanmar

Like the rest of the world, the culture in Myanmar is becoming more and more secular.

Founded in 1934, Holy Cross Theological College (HCTC) has long played a central role in training clergy and uniting the Anglican church in Myanmar. Now, with the church in Myanmar at a crossroads in a battle for orthodoxy, the demand for theological training has expanded.

In 2020, ARDF approved a grant of $115,000 to expand the college. ARDF’s funding is part of a larger project to build a new 29,450-square-foot, four-story Anglican Training and Resource Center. The first floor has classrooms, a study room, an office, and a community center. The second floor houses an upgraded library with multimedia and archive facilities. The third floor has classrooms and guest rooms. The fourth floor will have a graduation hall, community hall, and mini-theater.

This project, now nearly completed, has been blessed from the beginning. The first round of ARDF funding was sent on the day before the military coup! It was received by the church without incident - just a nerve-wracking delay. Miraculously, construction has been ongoing, even with the rising political tensions in Myanmar. The third floor was completed last summer and now the top floor is nearly complete. The elevator has been ordered from Spain and will be installed in May. A dedication service to officially open the building is tentatively scheduled for May or June of this year. And during construction, student instruction has continued.

“We are currently running our courses online, via zoom. Our final year Bachelor of Theology students will be with us in our compound for a month in February 2022 in order to finalize their papers and exams. We have decided and planned to run our programs in person in the 2022-23 academic year.” - The Rev. Dr. Paul Myint Htet Htin Ya, Principal, HCTC.

The completion of this project will result in highly qualified and empowered graduates, able to serve with confidence for the Lord’s ministry in this changing and challenging era. We are so grateful for the many supporters who adopted this project with their financial support and their prayers. Stay tuned for the final report.
