On December 29, a 6.4 massive earthquake in Croatia left seven dead and tens of thousands homeless. Three additional quakes and aftershocks brought more damage the next day. The village of Petrinja, southeast of the capital of Zagreb, sustained the most damage and is now uninhabitable, according to Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic

Don’t worry if this news is new to you! It did not make the front page of many newspapers. However, the church is already mobilizing. Our friends in the Reformed Episcopal Church in Croatia, led by Bishop Jasmin Milić, are assisting with efforts to aid those affected, handing out needed supplies in conjunction with the Croatian Red Cross. Bishop Jasmin is leading the effort to gather and distribute water, food, blankets, toilet paper, and other necessities to anyone in need.

By distributing these in Jesus’s name, Bishop Jasmin prays that peace will come to this region, which is particularly divided along ethnic lines. Indeed, new gang activity is on the rise, still hoping to settle scores from the earlier war(s)! But the Lord is using Bishop Jasmin as a peacemaker. He is respected and accepted by all three sides of the conflict. In a time of great need, Bishop Jasmin asks us to join him in prayer for peace.

However, the need is greater than what the church on the ground can offer. You can help by donating directly to our partner, the REC Board of Foreign Missions, here in the States. They are sending emergency funds directly to the church in Croatia.

We are thankful that the REC churches in Croatia sustained no losses and are able to begin collecting food, water, clothing, and other necessities for people in Petrinja and nearby villages. But they need your help to meet the needs. Thanks for your prayers and for encouraging the church in Croatia in their efforts to be a light in this current darkness.
