New Boarding School Brings Hope to Girls

South Sudan has some of the lowest educational statistics in the world, especially in the area of health and education for girls. Only one in 10 girls completes their primary education. The cattle culture in South Sudan - which values girls as an easy source of wealth if they marry at an early age - also contributes to the challenges of keeping girls in school. These girls need a safe place where they can learn and develop skills that better position them for success.

The Diocese of Wau will construct a secondary boarding school for girls. This will empower girls by offering an affordable, quality education.

Construction will take three to six months to complete four of the eight classrooms planned. Once completed, the school will admit the first 200 students who will utilize four classrooms. As the students move on, the diocese will construct the additional four classrooms so that the school can accommodate 400 girls at full capacity. Plans also call for hiring 15 teachers, including a principal and an assistant.

This project is expected to have a large impact as members of the community come to value education for girls as they interact with the school as parents, vendors, suppliers, neighbors, etc.
