Re:  Appeal for emergency relief for IDPs in Warrap State

Dear Colleagues,

Greetings in Jesus name! I am extremely sad to write this letter of appeal to you for the relief assistance to help alleviate the suffering of our people who have been displaced from their homes by the ongoing political conflicts in our country and I have taken the pain it carries to do so.  On 15th December 2013 heavy fighting broke out in Juba between the presidential guards and soldiers loyal to the former Vice President Dr Riek Machar Teny.  The incident took us by surprise and has resulted in the loss of thousands of innocent lives.

A total of 10,000 South Sudanese refugees have arrived in Aweng, Turalei in Twic County and Man-Angui, in Gogrial West County, Warrap State from Unity State since 16 December 2013 following the heavy fighting Unity State Capital Bentiu and the nearby towns.

However we are grateful to God for sparing our lives so that we can continue the ministry God has entrusted onto us. We’ve been praying for speedy support of our people but it has not been fully realized due to financial constraints.    Many people have lost their lives – although we cannot give a figure as we are still gathering more information – tens of thousands of the internally displaced people who have since fled from Unity State to Twic and Gogrial Counties in Warrap State are in dire need of our assistance. We want to be a channel of blessings to several of these victims.

We’re desperately in need of assistance and I have summoned up courage to contact you. Our priority now is to meet the needs of some 10,000 displaced people who have camped in Gogrial and Twic Counties as soon as possible. Many of these people are currently living without basic services as most food stores and homes were completely burnt down and people are currently camping under pathetic and overcrowded conditions under trees and rural schools, which are causing severe malnutrition and the outbreak of diseases. Some of these schools do not have toilets and water sources.

Bentiu town, the capital of Unity state has experienced destruction and looting of property, with thousands of people displaced and hundreds of lives lost.  Although Bentiu town is now in government control, the fighting still rages on outside the town.  Further more, rebel forces loyal to the Former Vice President Dr. Riek Machar recaptured Malakal town a few weeks a go from government forces, but was retaken by government forces one week later further worsening the already complicated situation. .

It’s for these reasons that ECS, Diocese of Wau is humbly appealing to you therefore to pray with us and to help us lobby your governments, organizations and churches to come to our aid so as to help us alleviate the sufferings of the affected people as some of them are now dying of hunger, diseases such as diarrhea and malaria, particularly the mothers and children.  The crisis which began as a political struggle within the SPLM party has turned into a military struggle which has unfortunately taken the dimension of ethnic rivalry between the Dinka and the Nuer tribes.  And as a Church, we are deeply concerned and worried that if the situation is not contained it will lead into chaos which might be uncontrollable. It’s for this reason that we are herein making appeal to Churches, charitable organizations and agencies to please.  Although there are some NGOs present providing some assistance other parts of the country, the humanitarian crisis is still very bad in Twic and Gogrial West Counties.

Together, we will ensure 1000 utensils, 1000 mosquito nets, 1000 fishing nets, 1000 clothes, 6000 hooks, 1000 blankets, 500 boxes of medicine, 1000 water jerry cans, 1000 tents, and 3000 plastic sheets are supplied to the affected families currently camping in Twic and Gogrial West Counties .

None of this would be possible without your help. Together we are praying to rebuild the future of not just one thousand households in South Sudan, but every household affected by the conflict. Our work isn’t over yet, with your help we will keep working until every household can survive, get help and be protected in every corner of South Sudan.

Thanking you for helping us and for being there for the vulnerable people of South Sudan before, during and after these conflicts’ your donation will go along way to provide hope to the conflict affected communities in Warrap State.
