The #GivingTuesday campaign provides an antidote to the materialism and commercialism that so often permeate the Thanksgiving/Christmas Season. As we start thinking about Christmas shopping for our friends and loved ones on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, let’s also remember the people around the world who lack the basic necessities of life that we take for granted on a daily basis.
The #GivingTuesday website describes the idea:
We have a day for giving thanks. We have two for getting deals. This year help us create #GivingTuesday. A new day for giving back. On Tuesday December 3, 2013, global charities, families, businesses, community centers, students and more will come together to create #GivingTuesday.
It’s a simple idea. Just find a way for your family, your community, your company or your organization to come together to give something more. Then tell everyone you can about how you are giving. Be a part of a national celebration of our great tradition of generosity.
This effort is especially important since Black Friday will come a day early this year as many large chain stores and malls promise to stay open all Thanksgiving Day.
ARDF is encouraging Anglican individuals and congregations across North America to give on Dec. 3rd and join the #GivingTuesday movement. As we focus on buying gifts for loved ones on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, lets remember our poor brothers and sisters in the developing world who remain trapped in poverty.
